Temperament: The Pomeranian is a joyful and lively little dog. It’s smart, eager to learn, and extremely loyal to its owner and family. This breed makes an excellent companion and show dog, captivating many with its gentle and affectionate nature. The Pomeranian is alert, curious, and full of energy, standing out as one of the most independent toy breeds, but it responds well to a firm yet gentle approach. Its liveliness and spirit make it a favorite even among those who typically aren’t drawn to toy dogs. While Pomeranians can be choosy eaters, with proper introduction, they usually get along well with other dogs and household animals. Poms also excel as little watchdogs, adding an extra layer of security to your home.

History: Pomeranians originated in the Pomeranian region from ancient Spitz dog types found in the far northern countries. They have some close relatives like the Norwegian Elkhound, Schipperke, German Spitz, American Eskimo Dog, Samoyed, and other dogs belonging to the Spitz or Northern group. These dogs are known for their distinctive wedge-shaped heads, upright ears, and thick, fluffy coats. In the past, Pomeranians used to weigh as much as 30 pounds.

Over time, Pomeranians were bred to become smaller and more compact, eventually reaching their adorable and petite size that we know and love today!
